What Deck?

If you have purchased many different decks from Ellusionist or other various websites, here is a guide that will help you know when to use those decks instead of basic bicycle decks.

Basic Bicycle decks

These decks are standard quality, and are great for both practice and performances. When performing street or close up magic, I recommend using these cards. They enhance the effect because most people have seen basic bicycle decks. Therefore, it eliminates any suspicion of a gaff or set up deck.

Ellusionist Decks

Please support Magic Hat and buy your decks through this link.

These decks have extremely good quality. However, when performing with them, it does raise some suspicion; mostly because the spectators have never seen a deck like that before. I recommend using these decks for color changes, flourishes, and XCM. I very rarely use my Ellusionist decks for performances. You can use them for practice, but I suggest that you don’t because they are quite expensive for a deck of cards.

When buying a gaff deck, should I buy it in regular bicycle deck form, or Ellusionist custom deck form?

When buying a gaff deck such as the rising deck, invisible deck, or gaff deck (with all the specialized cards), I highly recommend purchasing it in regular bicycle deck form. The reason is because when using a gaff deck, you can perform tricks that regular decks of cards can’t do. It may be extremely suspicious do an incredible effect using a deck that is rare, or not common (ex: black tiger deck). Therefore, if you have a gaff deck that’s in regular bicycle deck form, people will not be suspicious as to whether you have a fixed deck, simply because they are used to seeing a regular bicycle deck. Hence, it will enhance the effect greatly.

What about normal red/blue back Tally-Ho's or Squeezers? This could have been a lot longer. The two i just metioned are great and do not arouse suspicion.

Have just bought an Invisible Deck, but wondered if other people change the order in which they came, or leave them as they are. What do you do?

I stick to the genuine article. the bicycle deck for two good reasons. I like to show my spectators that im clean so i use a normal deck, but thats what i want them to think. And if you show spectators a deck of cards they have never seen before they start to suspect if a trick deck. you don't want your spectators to think that, trust me i have learned from experience but hey everybodies different right. So, thats my opinion.

i had a black deck once and i used to do that too, hand it out for inspection but they will still think its a trick deck no matter what.

IF you have a trick deck of any kind, it would be wise to have a normal deck of the same kind. You could do a trick with the trick deck and then switch the trick with the normal deck and hand the normal one out for examination.

I use a different deck for each table I hop to, that way it just looks like I'm varying, with marked decks it's a good idea to start with some location tricks to set a false sense with the spectator. ALSO, once you've amazed someone with a couple of good tricks, they stop trying to figure out how it's done as they're still stuck on the first trick. The invisible deck is a great trick but unless you're able to switch it for an un gimmicked deck I only use it as a climax OR as an emergency get-out.

In response to ItalianDude13, yes Kem cards are definitely your best choice for poker. I went through god knows how many decks of bikes, bees and tallyhos before I realised it was worth investing in some kem cards.

Go to a job fair or anywhere that companies give out decks for free (if you're too young, send your parents). Nothing says ungimmicked like a deck that has a hotel, airline, or other business and their website on the back of it. And like I said, they are usually free. I have about 10 decks of cards from Target because they are always at the job fairs where I live. As far as the "bikes" "Tally-hos" and "Bees" You're right, people have seen them. Especially in the hands of magicians so if you think that means "ungimmicked" to the spectator, think again.

bigwurm, you are soooo right. When I travel I often buy a deck in the hotel gift shop with the resort logo on it. (Actually I buy 3, and turn one into an invis deck). But around home I tend to use bikes because they are everywhere. i can borrow a deck, and swap it for a gaff deck, then back again without anyone noticing.
