A coin is placed on the left hand and is closed, when opening the hand, the coin has vanished.
Retention Vanish
Preparation
Its better if you use a big coin, this makes it easy and more convincing, a half dollar works well.
Pictures
Method
Grab the coin near to the edge with your right index and thumb and just put the other finger on one side without grabbing the coin as in picture 1. Start pretending to place the coin on your left hand as shown on picture 2. Instead of placing the coin, start spinning the coin on the axis of your index and thumb so it spins into your right hand covered by your right second middle and little finger as shown on pictures 3 and 4.
As you do this, timing is very important because this happens at the same time that you close your left hand to cover the move. Then, when the coin is totally hidden by your right fingers, take out the right hand and complete closing the left hand. It is important to take the right hand out the same way as when grabbing the coin, so it is clear that the hand is clean. If done with practice and smoothly, this sleight is very convincing.

| Yexo 15th Mar 07 | I see how this can easily work. Good trick. Although when you show that hand empty, you will have to have a way of getting rid of the palmed coin because once they see that your hand is empty, they will be ALL over that other hand. | |
| jnj0595 15th Mar 07 | thats clever. i like it. although it is os old. | |
| crissangelfreak 15th Mar 07 | It is an ok effect but I beleive it could be better because you dont end clean. To end clean you could wave the hand they think the coin is in to misdirect them while you drop the coin in your pocket. And add in some interesting reveal. I may use this one. | |
| hectorgiovanni 15th Mar 07 | good sleight but i like the french drop better | |
| dasuprememep 15th Mar 07 | french drop isn't really better. this vanish is a much better way of fake transfering a coin. | |
| Loki67 15th Mar 07 | Finally, another method for beginners... Now all the beginners here won't be all like "OMGZZ, I CAN DOO DA FRNCH DROP!" | |
| josefelipe11 15th Mar 07 | after you close your palm you could swing your hand away from your body and then say "watch, its gonna go from my hand to my pocket" and when you say that, you put the coin in your pocket and then do like a little shake with your hand or something like that, or show that the coin is traveling through you arm, then show your hand empty and show that it is in your pocket. | |
| Gamerfreek11 15th Mar 07 | This trick is nice, but french drops, to many people know, and if you dont practice the french drop, it becomes obvious, this one is really easy to learn, and a little bit more convincing. | |
| Torres14 15th Mar 07 | pretty good for beginers and its another style of making it disipear i like it | |
| happycow 16th Mar 07 | better then french drop everyone! | |
| Xxsolja89xX 16th Mar 07 | hmm pretty good but find a way to ditch the coin | |
| leverkusdamian 16th Mar 07 | actually this is just a sleght of hand that you use in a trick, its liket he french drop, you also stay with the coin in one hand, but with a good routine, you can do many many things, and it is always good to have different false transfers, there are many many and this is a basic variation from the retention vanish. its not intended to be alone, combine it as sayed with misdirection and other things happening. | |
| Aravind 16th Mar 07 | This is the best vanish I have ever seen.. I normally prefer a variation 4 this slieght.. After you have retained the coin in the wrong hand its better if you classic palm that coin using some misdirections like pointing using that hand.. U can use it in a variety of tricks like coin across. | |
| DenisSeal 16th Mar 07 | This trick is brilliant, in my coin routine, after I pretend to take it i thumb palm the coin and brush my other ahnd to show that they are clean. | |
| poopooman 16th Mar 07 | i Learn't this on In The Beginning there were coins Dvd, A truly amazing vanish. | |
| Taishin 16th Mar 07 | Great one! ^^ Simple, but youd be surprised how amazed people are by the simplest of illusions, whilst we keep focusing on the complexities lol In any case, to end clean, simple drop the hand with the palmed coin to your side, lean forward with your fisted empty hand, this will call attention to the empty hand, and deposit coin in pocket. Its amazingly convincing, i promise! Again, awesome trick! | |
| Vincenzo 16th Mar 07 | I tryied it, but I don't know that is write, please watch this and tell me. Go to youtube and behind link copy this: watch?v=OdI-GrPbIjg | |
| Hawk 16th Mar 07 | This is a nice vanish, but not strictly what I would call a retention of vision vanish. | |
| mustang 16th Mar 07 | try puttig on some more pictures or videos | |
| chaostryder 18th Mar 07 | This is one of those easy to learn, hard to master trick. One of the basic coin vanishes, but nonetheless one of the most effective, great submission! | |
| Leprechaun04 20th Mar 07 | Here is Good way to end this trick: 1. Bring the fist that they think the coin is in, shake your hand, and open it up, to show it is gone. 2. Bring the hand that actually has coin in it, palming the coin out of view. 3. Make an opened fist with the opening facing up. Reach the tip of some of your fingers into the fist, and let the coin drop into the coin hand's fingers. 4. Pull out the appeared coin from your fist. | |
| 800runner 21st Mar 07 | It's a good sleight, but I'm not sure it can stand alone as a trick. It seems much easier and more convincing than the french drop. | |
| jkersey 22nd Mar 07 | I prefer this to the french drop. Performed correctly, when your audience describes the trick to someone else, they will generally "remember" actually seeing the coin in your palm after you pulled your hand away. | |
| terri2 22nd Mar 07 | I think the french drope is much better | |
| Erosennin 26th Mar 07 | The french drop is not actually used in this sleight, so I don't know why is it mentioned in the details. As with most of the vanishers the other hand is the issue, but as lond as yoi keep them occupied with the hand that doesnt have the coin any more, and wait until you expose it, you can pretty much place the coin with the other hand where ever you want...just don't do it twice in front of the same audience..do a diferent vanish where you can instantly show both hands empty and prove their previous guesses wrong | |
| Deceiver 28th Mar 07 | Great trick, excellent for coin teleports and such. DEFINITELY a must for me. :) | |
| 195 1st Apr 07 | after you close your palm you could swing your hand away from your body and then say "watch, its gonna go from my hand to my pocket" and when you say that, you put the coin in your pocket and then do like a little shake with your hand or something like that, or show that the coin is traveling through you arm, then show your hand empty and show that it is in your pocket. | |
| 195 2nd Apr 07 | you could also while their checking your hand u can drop it into your sleves and hold your arms out horizantal and show both your hands are empty | |
| jake22 7th Apr 07 | This is pretty good but is easily found out.DON'T DO TWICE | |
| versonator 8th Apr 07 | its ok and its probly not the method I woulkd use but I tried it and it lookes great on camera! | |
| drakoemson 10th Apr 07 | A possible way to clean up would be to reach in your pocket with the hand that his holding the coin to take a pencil out or an "invisible" magic wand and while doing that, drop the coin in your pocket. Then use what you pulled out as a magic wand to make the coin disappear. | |
| drakoemson 11th Apr 07 | I think this is actually called the push vanish. | |
| Far 13th Apr 07 | WAS a good trick but so many people has found out how it is done becouse somebody didn't practice it good engouh. | |
| magianfreak99 14th Apr 07 | This trick is convinsing when used properly....you could also use the raven, french drop, and all the tricks in the book with the sponge ball rotine. | |
| Rhino2693 17th Apr 07 | This is an interesting method, but personally i think the frenh drop is a little more convinceing and easier. | |
| DenisSeal 20th Apr 07 | Very good sleight, very useful - used in coins, spongeballs, rings etc. | |
| magickuhn11 5th May 07 | Not as good as the French Drop, in my mind. The reason is simply because this is less exposed-looking(to the spectator) than the French Drop. | |
| Xeada 5th May 07 | with a little tweakegethis could be a mix of a variation aof a french drop, and coin from the sky.pop it on your head when they are looking at the other hand.definatly somthing i'll use | |
| Bruce54 26th May 07 | nice and helpful, probably will use it beginning of harder tricks | |
| youngster 3rd Jun 07 | thanks for the help thats really helpfull thanks u and good explanation | |
| Dannin 22nd Jun 07 | This is on the "Silver Dream" DVD. After you have concealed the coin in your hand, bring your hand up to your shoulder (this only works with shirts with pockets) and wave down. As you wave down drop the coin in your front pocket and wave the now empty hand over your other hand. Show both hands empty. | |
| bmccurdy 8th Aug 07 | Extremely useful sleight. Not a stand alone trick. I learned it on David Roth's Ultimate Coin Magic DVD. He uses it frequently and it is always effective. I have tried it out on a few friends and it is very deceptive. If used in a routine, the fact that your other hand is not "clean" becomes a moot point. | |
| guitarrich 2nd Oct 07 | i dont get this oops can u do a video, i'll find it easier then cheers | |
| Superant1 13th Oct 07 | Alot of you are saying that you don't end clean, well... with the coin in your right hand, (supposedly) bring your left hand up to your mouth. Push the coin with your thumb to your fingertips. Reach in your mouth and pull the coin out, show your hand clean. Works best with a signed coin. | |
| coreyhammer 30th Dec 08 | You could also bring the coin to fingertip rest, point to the empty hand where specs thought the coin was, and then switch over your hands, and let the coin drop from fingertip rest into the other hand which now points at the hand that kept the coin. I'll work up a quick guide on that. It's a sleight I've been working on. | |
| Aburrows 26th Oct 09 | I prefer the french drop, as there is no way you can easily dispose of the vanished coin, and it is fairly obvious where the coin has gone. I still use the RV, but not when I can help it. | |
| thebeaky85 31st Dec 09 | Why are we spending so much time talking about ending clean, this is clearly just highlighting the actual, placement part of the vanish. I only know about 6 ways to do this kind of vanish, and I like to have more. Even though you still have the coin in the other hand at the end. | |
| saibotenzo 7th Aug 10 | There is a more convincing variation by Justin Miller in his coin trick 'Silver Dream.' There is much less movement involved and is much more deceptive.Look it up! | |
| kevi007 16th Sep 10 | Nice | |
| Threedom4 30th Oct 10 | This is like the reverse french drop in a way. Instead of taking the coin out of one hand, you are placing the coin in one hand.
P.S. The French drop is easier to do, more visually tricky, and honestly, much better than this trick. | |
| jtpersonman 5th May 11 | pretty easy to do and a lot of people see through this trick, but some do not it is just a matter of chance how this goes over | |
